What Is Art Consulting? My Process, Start to Finish

I customize every project to maximize value and return for my clients. That's the short version. Here's the longer one.

As an art consultant, I advise clients on the purchase of art. I work primarily in contemporary art, commissioning artists to produce work for private and public spaces. Kali Grey Art Consulting brings a distinctive perspective to professionals and individuals seeking custom art for site-specific installations, including original artwork, murals, interior art collections, live event painting, and artist-led workshops. My background spans arts administration, client and artist relations, creative design, creative marketing, and project management, and that mix is what makes the "consulting" part possible.

With thoughtful consideration to layout and presentation, I tell the most visually compelling story I can for a space and a project. I offer art consulting for commercial and fine art projects across a range of verticals and industries, most commonly for businesses and corporations, office spaces, hospitality companies, and residential buildings. My clients include commercial brands, interior designers, real estate developers, restaurants, hotels, apartment complexes, multi-family homes, private homes, construction companies, creative agencies and studios, healthcare facilities, public art organizations, nonprofits, and individuals.

I'm a full-service art consultancy with a wide range of capabilities, and my job is to get the right artwork in front of the right people at the right time. Whether the project is small or large, indoor or outdoor, I consider the best medium, style, and artist to recommend within your budget.

Here's the process I follow for most projects, whether the space is a private home or a hotel lobby:

  1. Understand the client's vision and goals. I begin with a consultation and site evaluation, and suggest themes, styles, and concepts for artwork indoors or outdoors.

  2. Formulate a creative narrative and theme. I research artwork context, its relationship to the space and client, and sourcing options.

  3. Identify key locations and materials. I analyze venue and floor plans, design plans, mood boards, and the substrates needed to present the artwork well.

  4. Develop artwork strategy and budgets. I put together a formal art package proposal including artists, artworks, and custom concepts.

  5. Commission artists. I negotiate pricing and custom concepts with artists tailored to the project.

  6. Manage the art project. I oversee artist and vendor relations, art shipment, and communication between everyone involved.

  7. Handle presentation and framing. I produce custom framing, matting, hardware, and accessories.

  8. Install and document. I deliver, install, and provide documentation you can use for social media, marketing, or press.

With over a decade in this business, I've learned how to be an effective moderator between client and artist, someone who can hold a vision and a budget at the same time without losing either. My goal stays the same on every project: thorough communication, real organization, and an outcome that feels worth the investment.

It's never too early, or too late, to start investing in art. If that's the direction you're headed, I'd love to talk about what your project needs.
