Little Taco and Tequila
Portland, OregonLittle Taco & Tequila, a small restaurant and bar in Old Town, had to cut its hours way back when most of the neighborhood shut down around it. The owners planned to board up the building to protect it during the slow months, but they didn't want blank plywood sitting on their storefront. They wanted the space to still say something about who they are. That's where we came in.
We brought in a local artist active in Portland's creative scene to paint a mural centered on Black Boy Joy, the idea of Black fathers as steady, loving presences who show up for their families every day. She built the piece around a soft, vibrant palette with a distinctly feminine touch, and wove in symbols of light and equality throughout. The artist has deep roots in Portland's progressive art scene, and we wanted her voice specifically on this wall, both to support Black Lives Matter and to give a BIPOC artist a real platform to say something that mattered to her.
Projects like this are the ones we care most about. This mural became part of the Together We Grow Community Art Project, adding one more piece to the public art spreading across Portland that year.
