West Edge Design Fair
Los Angeles, CaliforniaWe wanted our West Edge booth to feel like LA, not just represent it. So we built it around Oceanwide Plaza, the downtown towers that sat half-finished and empty until graffiti writers climbed in one night and covered every window. Nobody planned that. It just happened, and somehow it became one of the most photographed things in the city. We couldn't recreate the buildings, obviously, but we could recreate the feeling. Vinyl outlines of the windows went up on our booth wall, and we handed out paint markers. People tagged. A kid drew a cat. Someone wrote their grandmother's name. By the end of the first day the whole thing looked lived-in.
Next to it we ran a slower piece: a giant stencil spelling out LA neighborhoods, Echo Park, Boyle Heights, Venice, with the letters left blank. For two days people filled them in a little at a time, mostly strangers working beside other strangers. Then on day three we pulled the stencil off. What was underneath surprised us, honestly, a full mural, uneven and a little messy in the best way, made by hands we never met. That's really the point of what we do at Kali Grey. Give people something to touch, and they'll finish it for you.
